Registration still available for new fall autism classes

The 12-week social enrichment classes for all age groups offer groups for elementary grades K-2 on Monday between 4 and 5 p.m., for elementary grades 3 through 5 on Tuesday between 4 and 5 p.m., for middle school grades 6 through 8 on Thursday from 4 to 5:30 p.m. and for high school students in grades 9 through 12 on Wednesday between 4 and 5:30 p.m.
Palmer Holliday, LCSW, is coordinator of the after-school programs, with Melissa Desposito, MSW, co-facilitating the elementary-age groups. All classes will be available at Helping People Succeed offices at 320 Florida Street, just east of U.S. 1 between Johnson Avenue and Old Dixie Hwy.
“Group members learn valuable social, communication, and independent living skills – all in a fun, creative, non-judgmental, and therapeutically-supervised setting,” explained Holliday, who started the after-school middle school programs in 2012 and added an elementary-age after-school program is 2013. High school sessions were included during the summer months.
The sessions are $20 per session or $240 for the full 12-week program. Transportation is offered from some schools, depending upon the enrollment of each class. Registration is still available. In addition to the after-school programs, Helping People Succeed will begin a parent support group/training on the second Wednesday of each month – beginning September 11 - between 6 and 7:30 p.m. Guest speakers will be on hand to discuss topics related to autism spectrum disorder and Asperger’s Syndrome and will also provide general support/resources to families.
Other programs getting underway in September include: an Art Therapy class for the ASD child on Thursdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. facilitated by Jennifyer Hammontree, a Slow Flow Yoga class for children on Tuesdays from 5 to 6 p.m. and a Restorative Yoga class for caregivers on Mondays from 10 to 11 a.m. Both Yoga classes are being taught by Joanna Izzo.
Helping People Succeed’s popular Music & Movement group with Ms. Paula will also be available for children between 3 to 5 years old identified as having developmental delays or autism spectrum disorder. Other programs, such as a Kids Night Out, are in the planning stages.
Helping People Succeed is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, founded in 1964 to work with adults with disabilities. Since that time, many programs for infants and toddlers and their families, Baby Steps, Healthy Families, Behavioral Health and Community Connections keep Helping People Succeed engaged with 4,000 families in Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River and Okeechobee counties.
